Mia Scomazzon was awarded the title at Mossman Show’s final day on July 21.

Events such as the recent Mossman Show Ball have aided in recognising and celebrating the Shire’s talented, dedicated and motivated young people who represent the next generation of rural leaders.

With the agricultural industry evolving, these young front runners will play a crucial role in shaping the future and ensuring the region’s agricultural heritage is not forgotten. It will encourage younger generations to take an active role in shaping what comes next.

During past months those vying for the coveted title have had the opportunity to highlight their achievements, aspirations and commitment to rural industries, while reinforcing the importance of leadership and community service.

Ms Scomazzon said she was surprised to be the eventual winner, amongst a strong field of contenders.

“I was honestly very shocked when I heard my name called,” she said.

“I’ve been volunteering since I was eight and as my Mum and Dad do it so naturally, I’ve just gone along with them.

“Prior to the Young Rural Ambassador competition, I’ve been helping at the Mossman Show with my Dad, setting up the fruit and vegetable display.

“With my Mum, I’ve been helping the leukaemia ladies and I’ve been an unofficial member since the start of high school.”

Having been a volunteer for more than 10 years, Ms Scomazzon feels that it has started to feel like a normal part of her life, to the point that she may have even stopped appreciating how much effort she has put into it.

“Personally, I don’t believe you can put a prize on who does it the best, but I am very humbled by being the choice for winner this year,” she said.

“My fellow young rural ambassadors all deserved that award and I would not have enjoyed it as much if it was not for having people my age working with me.”

Ms Scomazzon said she hoped more young people would join local volunteer groups, as she believed young minds brought new ideas that can help the community flourish.

“I can’t wait to continue helping my community grow and I hope, with more people, we can bring more events back to our Shire. You know the ones our parents talk about from when they were younger” she said.
