The 22-year-old has just been selected as part of Queensland’s under-25 men squad.

The squad will form the foundation for team selections ahead of two major events on the representative calendar:

  • The annual test series against New South Wales, to be held in September

  • The prestigious Australian Sides Championships in November, hosted in Tasmania, for both open and senior categories.

“Congratulations to all players selected, your hard work and dedication have earned you this well-deserved recognition,” said Bowls Queensland in a statement.

“We look forward to an exciting and competitive 2025 season wearing maroon.”

A club spokesman said: “We are so proud of Malachy McTaggart being selected as part of the under 25 men squad. Congratulations.”

A natural in bowls, Mr McTaggart started playing nine years ago, and beyond junior state championships under his belt, he really started to grow upon his return to the sport with Mossman Bowls Club.

“I started bowling 11 years ago but really playing nine years ago,” he said.

“I could’ve done quite well when I was 17, unfortunately that year COVID hit and I lost my last year as a junior.

“Then I took an 18-month break and moved to Mossman and started playing socially with Mossman Bowls Club and a few of the bowlers invited me to bigger tournaments. From then on I’ve got a position in the Tropical Far North Queensland (TFNQ) side.”
