Members of ASEZ WAO, the Church of God Young Adult Worker Volunteer Group, gathered on Sunday 11 October to clean the park and the nearby bridge area.

The group had identified a significant amount of rubbish around Clarkes Creek after previously cleaning up other parts of Cairns.

ASEZ WAO representative Daniel Kang said the volunteers were surprised by the amount of litter in the area.

“We were looking for different areas to clean up and came to find a lot of rubbish in Clarkes Creek near Lions Park. That’s why we decided to clean that area.”

Volunteers collected discarded coffee cups, broken glass bottles, hamburger containers, ice-cream wrappers, cigarette butts and other waste.

Mr Kang said the dry season had made it easier for volunteers to access waterways and remove rubbish that would otherwise be difficult to reach during wetter conditions.

The Earlville clean-up followed similar community efforts on Spence Street in Bungalow on 28 June 2026 and on Wilkinson Street in Manunda on 26 July 2026.

During the July event, volunteers also collected 13 bags of rubbish.

ASEZ WAO stands for “From A to Z, Save the Earth. We are One Family” and organises volunteer activities such as environmental clean-ups, tree planting and blood donations.
