Track and field passion
FOR Dylan Saunders, running is more than just a sport, it’s a source of joy, pride and personal growth.

From the moment he first stepped on to the track at school, encouraged by a dedicated teacher-aide, Dylan discovered a passion that would light up his life.
That first 400m win sparked something special and he hasn’t looked back since.
Now competing in events including the 100m, 200m, 400m, discus and long jump, Dylan has found his stride.
The 16-year-old is especially proud of his achievements in discus, where he’s thrown 10m with a 1.5kg discus, an incredible feat that marks him as one of the best in his area.
His sprint times are also improving, with a recent 100m clocked at 17 seconds and a goal to break 16 seconds through consistent weekday training.
Dylan only started running this year, but his story is already one of courage, growth and community spirit.
As he heads to the state championship finals at the Queensland Representative School Sport (QRSS) track and field event later this month, one thing is clear, Dylan is running toward a future full of possibility and he’s taking the community with him.
Competing at the championships in Townsville will be a huge milestone for Dylan and his family, as a celebration of resilience, inclusion and the power of sport to bring people together.
For Dylan, it’s a chance to shine, to stretch into his zone and to chase big dreams.
According to Dylan’s family, his favourite part of competing is making friends, sharing stories and stepping out of his shell alongside others who face their own challenges.
Since moving, to Mossman, from New South Wales in 2019, Dylan’s family have enjoyed great support from the community.
From fundraising efforts like Nicole’s 100 boards at school to the encouragement from teachers like Ms Bonnie, Ms Bridget and his coach Mr Hamilton at Mossman High, every gesture has lifted Dylan higher.
As part of Child Protection Week, Mossman Support Services raised $100 for Dylan by selling slushies at the event.
“We are highlighting great achievements within the lead up to Disability Action Week in November and December,” said lifestyle administrator Holly Todd.
“The proceeds will help supplement travel and accommodation costs for Dylan’s family as they head to Townsville for the special games,” she said.
