Stay active during holidays

THE cooler weather beckons this school holidays, with opportunities to get outdoors, explore local attractions and make the most of what the region has to offer.

Cairns Regional Council is offering a range of free and low-cost activities to cater to all ages, with a mix of outdoor adventures, creative workshops and community activities.

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden said the region had many parks, pools and natural attractions where families could spend time together.

“These holidays are a great chance to get outdoors, explore somewhere new or rediscover a local favourite, as well as enjoy the many free and low-cost programs available across the region,” she said.

“The kids can stay busy with activities through council’s libraries, Tanks Arts Centre and Active Living programs, there’s something for every age and interest.”

Added to the outdoor options is the 1.3km Red Arrow walking track in the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct which has recently been upgraded and is suitable for a range of fitness levels and Lake Placid has also reopened following restoration works.

Organised programs include:

  • Tanks Arts Centre hosting hands-on workshops introducing young people to film production

  • Cairns Libraries which are running their popular free sessions, including youth open mic, hero squad, twist and shout Rubik’s Cube challenge.

  • Active Living programs, which include youth multi-sports in White Rock and beach volleyball at the Cairns Esplanade.
