Special Legacy round footy
AFL Cairns is hosting its ANZAC Day Legacy round this weekend.

Players from South Cairns and North Cairns men’s and women’s teams launched the round, wearing ANZAC Day guernseys and presenting the Legacy Shield, alongside FNQ Legacy president Alfie Santos and acting executive officer Melanie Allen.
Now in its fourth year, the Legacy Round continues to build its partnership with FNQ Legacy, raising funds for the organisation’s new premises in Smithfield while bringing the community together through football.
AFL Cairns football operations manager Brad Channon said the round remained one of the most important on the calendar.
“Yeah, fantastic weekend. Legacy round. It’s our fourth year with the Far North Queensland Legacy. It’s a really proud partnership we have with the team,” he said.
“It’s just an opportunity where we’re able to use footy, which is such a powerful vehicle for community engagement, to bring everyone together.”
Mr Santos said the support was vital for veterans and their families.
“What it means to us is that we have community support for our veterans, families, and ANZAC Day is a time to commemorate, to think about our current serving members, but also those that have given so much in service to this country,” he said.
On the field, players say the round carries added meaning.
“It’s an absolute privilege to play ANZAC Day… it just has a different feel to it,” said Damien Hill from South Cairns Cutters.
“Very special. The buildup is awesome. The game has always been played with a bit more intensity,” he said.
Matches will be played across multiple venues this weekend, with six of seven teams taking part, while funds raised will support FNQ Legacy’s ongoing work and the development of its new Smithfield facility.
