MORE sandbags have arrived to combat the heavy rain that has continued to cause road closures, major disruption to the Daintree ferry and general unrest to residents and businesses across the Douglas Shire.

Although the immediate area avoided the brunt of Cyclone Narelle last week, the last couple of weekends have delivered extremely high levels of rainfall.

Sandbag stations across the Shire have had adequate amounts of sand and bags to cope with the recent deluge, however, Douglas Shire Council have prepared ahead of more potential heavy rain, by ordering an additional 5000 sandbags to bolster local sandbag stations.

Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said council was taking sensible steps to stay ahead of community needs.

“Our shire is already saturated, and with the bureau forecasting heavy rain across the Far North, we’re making sure our community has the resources it needs,” she said. “We’re topping up our supplies to ensure we remain well-prepared for whatever this system brings.”

Cr Scomazzon said recent improvements at sandbag stations were already helping residents prepare more easily.

“The new scoops and bag holders are great and make the job much easier,” she said.

“Small upgrades like these make a real difference when the weather turns quickly.

“Some of our sites have shovels, but it is worth taking your own one just in case.”

Five sandbag locations are at Port Douglas Sports Complex, Wonga Beach Fire Brigade Shed, Mossman Showgrounds, Alexandra Bay SES shed and Daintree Village hall/sports oval.

Further information on sandbag locations can be found on the Douglas Dashboard website or app.
