Safety and wellbeing No. 1
LESS talk and more action – that was the message at the annual Child Protection Week Family Fun Day at Rex Smeal Park, Port Douglas.

Hosted by the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre’s Child and Parent Support Program, on 11 September, the day was attended by 300 local primary school prep students, early learning centres and families from across the Douglas Shire with young children.
The free event featured interactive activities, information stalls and entertainment designed to promote child safety and wellbeing.
Neighbourhood centre family and financial resilience coordinator and event organiser Erin Easton said the 2025 National Child Protection Week theme was ‘Every Conversation Matters: Shifting Conversation to Action’. “This message emphasises that open discussions are vital, but they must lead to concrete, practical steps taken by families, educators, communities and systems to ensure children’s safety and well-being,” she said.
“The goal is to empower everyone to move beyond words and take meaningful actions to protect children and young people from harm.”
With perfect weather and a beautiful park backdrop, feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive.
Ms Easton said she was grateful to the dedicated staff, volunteers and community partners whose efforts made the day a success.
The following day on Friday 12 September, a similar event was organised by the Mossman Support Services Youth Centre, at George Davis Park, in Mossman, from 3pm.
“Our free family fun day, run as part of Queensland Child Protection Week was full of fun and activities,” said youth development coordinator Brody Andrews.
“The heart of the day was simple but important: every child should feel safe, supported and connected and that takes all of us working together,” he said.
“It was brilliant seeing families relax, kids dive into the activities and people discover the local services here to help.”
Mr Andrews thanked all those involved with the day.
