Post-cyclone reconstruction projects receive $18.5m approvals
MORE than $18.5 million in reconstruction contracts awarded in June to repair critical infrastructure damaged by Tropical Cyclone Jasper has been retrospectively approved by Douglas Shire Council.

Major works include landslip repairs south of Daintree, bridge construction at Lees Crossing and Taylor’s Crossing and upcoming traffic management services for works in the Daintree/Cape Tribulation area.
It includes:
$10.8m to Colpo Constructions (Cairns) for the landslip repairs
$6.67m to NQ Civil Contractors (Townsville) for the bridge constructions
$1.05m to Far North Queensland Traffic Control (Mossman) for traffic control on the Alexandra Range.
Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said the significant works were part of the recovery process.
“These projects, which deliver lasting improvements for our community, are essential to getting our shire back on track,” she said.
The council has also endorsed a $2.7m tender submission to the Queensland Government for coastal recovery works following Tropical Cyclone Jasper.
The proposed projects include beach nourishment and revegetation at Newell Beach and Oak Beach, as well as dredging of the Mossman River mouth.
They include:
$656,605 – Newell Beach beach nourishment and revegetation using sand dredged from the Dickson Inlet by Marine Safety Queensland
$1.97m – Newell Beach dredging of the Mossman River mouth and sandbar with the direct land application of the dredge material as beach nourishment along Newell Beach
$82,887 – Oak Beach (Thala Beach Nature Reserve) sand pushing and revegetation using existing sand located along the beach.
Cr Scomazzon said the recovery works would aim to restore erosion buffers and stabilise damaged foreshores.
“These works are vital to protect our coastline and ensure our beaches remain safe and accessible for locals and visitors,” she said.
