Olympian backs new event
AUSTRALIAN marathon record holder Andy Buchanan has been named ambassador for the inaugural Run Port Douglas, part of this year’s Port Douglas Gran Fondo Festival.

Mr Buchanan, who set an Australian record with a time of 2:06:22 last year, said he was blown away after running the half-marathon course recently.
“Honestly, it was the best run I have ever done,” he said.
“Running along Four Mile Beach felt so good, I did not want it to end. I cannot wait to come back and be involved.”
More than 1300 entries have already been received for the 13 September event, with organisers expecting numbers to pass 1500.
But festival director Bade Stapleton said this year’s Gran Fondo would be the last.
He said the run would continue but falling cycling numbers meant the end of Gran Fondo.
“However, while we have worked hard to build something special, we must acknowledge a tough reality: cycling participation is declining nationwide and we haven’t been immune.
“Despite early success, our rider numbers have dropped steadily since peaking in 2023. This year alone, we’re on track to see a 20% decrease in participation compared to last year.” Mr Stapleton said fortunately Run Port Douglas was exceeding expectations.
“In its very first year, we’re on track to welcome over 1500 runners, far exceeding even our most optimistic expectations,” he said.
“Run Port Douglas is the future. The energy, excitement and growth potential of this event is enormous and it will bring thousands of new visitors to Port Douglas in the years ahead.”
Mr Stapleton said having an Olympian of Mr Buchanan’s calibre on board was a huge endorsement.
“To have someone like Andy call it one of the best courses he has ever run is incredible,” Mr Stapleton said.
“This is year one, and we have already tripled our entry forecast. We know the event is only going to grow from here.”
Mr Buchanan will not race this year as he prepares for the world championships marathon in Tokyo, but he confirmed he plans to return in 2026.
All distances, from the half-marathon to the family-friendly 2km, will finish on Four Mile Beach, with live music and cheering crowds planned at the finish line.
The 10km and 5km events will include flat, fast stretches through the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort.
The event is expected to contribute more than $2 million to the local economy.
