Old tech turns into smart show
BRISBANE-based artist Suzon Fuks will bring her immersive exhibition ‘e-Galaxy’ to Cairns on 16 February as part of a national tour exploring electronic waste, sustainability and human connection.
The exhibition transforms discarded electronic devices into a walkable, tactile installation featuring sculptures, artist books, video projections and soundscapes, all created from obsolete technology.
Ms Fuks said Cairns was a natural choice for the Australian tour, citing a long connection with the city’s arts community. “I’ve known NorthSite for a long, long time, maybe for more than 20 years, when it was still called KickArts and then CoCA,” she said.
“I really love this place, this venue, because of its multidisciplinary and inclusion.
“I always wanted to exhibit there. I’ve done presentations and workshops and I really love the people. That’s why I wanted to include Cairns. I really love the space, the venue.”
The project grew out of a shift in Ms Fuks’ artistic practice after years of working with digital platforms.
“I found myself spending more time fundraising and managing tech than making art,” she said. “At a certain point, I knew I had to return to something more tactile, something I could hold in my hands.”
While clearing out her Brisbane studio, she began dismantling old phones, laptops and obsolete equipment, uncovering what she describes as intricate systems still holding value.
“I want people to reflect on the use of electronic devices and also the waste that we cause by our use and abuse of these devices,” she said.
The Cairns installation will be larger than other stops on the tour.
“In Cairns, I will make a big labyrinth where people can take time to reflect while walking very slowly and discovering all the components on the floor,” she said.
