Well, you can, as caretakers of the Wonga Beach Caravan Park – a job described as one of the best in Australia and the world.

Douglas Shire Council is inviting applications from “a motivated and community-minded couple” to take on the role of caretakers at the caravan park along the pristine coastline of Far North Queensland.

It is a live-in contractor position starting on September 2025, offering a unique lifestyle opportunity in one of the region’s most scenic and relaxed environments.

Key details:

  • Initial term – 12 months

  • Extension options – up to two additional 12-month terms

  • Accommodation provided – a fully self-contained one-bedroom cabin

  • Caretakers will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the park, including guest assistance, basic maintenance, cleaning of amenities and ensuring the park remains a welcoming and safe environment for visitors.

  • The council said the couple being sought should be:

  • Friendly and approachable with strong communication skills

  • Reliable and proactive in managing responsibilities

  • Capable of performing light maintenance and cleaning tasks

  • Passionate about creating a positive experience for guests

  • Previous experience in hospitality, property management, or caretaking roles is highly desirable but not essential.

Current caretaker Steve Maddson said it was “paradise”.

He told the Seven Network that he and his wife visited the park four years ago while on holiday and then took on the caretaking role. They also exchanged wedding vows on the beach.

Now they are continuing their holiday and the position is up for grabs.

“It’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle,” Mr Maddson said.

“I guess the quiet sound of the waves is our alarm clock.”

Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said the Shire was “the best place in the world and that’s why we all live here”.

To receive an information pack outlining the full scope of the position, contact the council’s property team by email: enquiries@douglas.qld.gov.au or phone 4099 9444. Applications close Friday, August 8, 2025 at 4.30pm.
