New-style Christmas party
Festive extravaganza will draw and delight hundreds of families and children

A NEW-style Christmas extravaganza at the Mossman Show Grounds on Friday (5 December) will build on the success of last year’s Mossman Youth Centre event at George Davis Park and on the success of the Douglas Shire Council’s Christmas street parties from previous years.
“Mossman Support Services (MSS) have long been involved in supporting the Douglas Shire Council’s community Christmas street party, so working together on a larger celebration was a natural step,” said MSS youth development coordinator Brody Andrews.
He said this year, the Douglas Shire Council and Mossman Youth Centre, part of Mossman Support Services, wanted to offer a bigger, family-focused event that felt welcoming and distinctly local, celebrating community spirit, homegrown talent and local businesses. The Tin Shed joined as a major partner, helping to grow the event and keep activities and amusements free for families.
Mr Andrews said the idea developed from a shared vision of giving the region a chance to come together at the end of the year based around connection and celebration.
“That’s why the program blends a range of activities and entertainment, amusements, jumping castles, live music, Christmas carols, Santa photos, market stalls, food vendors and a fireworks show to finish the night,” Mr Andrews said.
“The event is intentionally accessible with free entry, providing plenty of activities for children, young people and adults, plus multiple ways for locals to be involved, whether as performers, stallholders or volunteers.
“It shines a light on local pride and local business and creates an opportunity for the community to share in the festive season side by side,” Mr Andrews said.
From 3pm-6pm, there’ll be a dedicated activity and entertainment area featuring local acts including The Giggles, Mossman Elder’s Justice Group, SharCeltica, Nex Gen Noise and a dance competition. There will also be a range of market stalls and food trucks to explore.
Some other highlights people can look forward to this year include Santa, who will make a spectacular arrival by Nautilus Aviation helicopter at 5pm and Carols by Candlelight will begin at 6pm, with the night wrapping up in style with a fireworks finale at 8.15 pm.
Families can enjoy free rides and children’s activities, Santa photos, face painting and a photo booth.
Organisers hope people leave feeling more connected to their neighbours, to local groups and to the wider community.
“Most of all, we want families to walk away with happy memories of a Christmas outing where everything felt easy, joyful and inclusive,” Mr Andrews said.
“For us, it really highlights what makes this area unique, how our community turns up for one another,” he said.
“Watching children’s faces when Santa arrives and seeing families singing along together during the carols is incredibly special. Those moments are exactly why we put so much energy into creating this event.”
