The new space will provide immediate relief for participants, families and staff as the organisation continues to recover from the impacts of Cyclone Jasper and respond to increasing demand for its wrap-around services.

While the search continues to gain funding for a purpose-built facility, the showgrounds venue will be used for sporting activities, social programs, skills development initiatives, such as gardening, cooking and other life skills, as well as social connection opportunities.

“This additional space comes at a critical time,” said Mossman Support Services chief executive officer Heather Taylor.

“Our youth and lifestyle support programs are growing and this venue will allow us to provide safe, engaging and meaningful activities for participants while we work towards a longer-term solution,” she said.

Mossman Support Services said they were grateful to Douglas Shire Council for supporting the interim arrangement and recognising the urgent need for expanded facilities.

“Partnerships like this highlight the strength and resilience of our community,” Ms Taylor said.

“Together, we are creating opportunities that ensure young people and people with disability have access to the programs and support they deserve,” she said.

Looking to the future, Mossman Support Services is encouraging philanthropists and private investors to come forward and play a role in building much-needed community service infrastructure.

“If we are to create a truly sustainable community with a wide range of supports available for everyone, we need investment at every level,” Ms Taylor said.

“We welcome conversations with those who share our vision for a strong, inclusive and resilient Douglas Shire,” she said.

The organisation continues to seek funding for a purpose-built premises to better serve the Douglas Shire’s growing needs, but in the meantime, the showgrounds location will provide a much-needed base for connection, recreation, life skill development, and community support.
