New chapter for artistic collective gallery and studio
CAIRNS Artists at Work has entered a new chapter following its transition to a fully independent incorporated association, with plans to expand opportunities for local artists and strengthen its Lake Street gallery.

The artist-run gallery and studio, home to 16 practising local artists, will continue operating from its established Cairns location, where artists exhibit their work, create, teach and engage directly with visitors.
The organisation recently decided to become independent of the Cairns Art Society, giving its members greater control over the gallery’s direction.
Gallery spokesperson Mark Willems said the move would allow the organisation to focus on supporting its artists and developing the space.
“Our focus has always been on providing a professional working studio for local emerging and established artists,” he said.
“By becoming independent, we can dedicate more energy and resources to supporting our member artists, developing new opportunities and building a vibrant creative hub for the community.”
Membership is limited and available by application, with members actively involved in gallery management as well as in their own artistic practice.
“This isn’t simply a place where artwork hangs on walls,” Mr Willems said.
“It is a place where art is made. Our artists are present, creating, collaborating, teaching and developing their practice every day,” he said.
“Visitors get an authentic insight into the artistic process, which is something very few galleries can offer.”
The gallery also offers affordable exhibition opportunities for non-member artists through its street-front window exhibition spaces and has received ongoing support from the building owner for its Lake Street home.
Plans for the independent organisation include exhibitions, professional development opportunities, community engagement projects and major regional art prizes.
The gallery plans to relaunch the Artchies Portrait Prize as an annual event from mid-2027, following two previous editions.
Additional art prizes for artists across Far North Queensland are also planned.
“We want to be known as a professional, welcoming and innovative artist-run gallery,” Mr Willems said.
“Our goal is to create a space where artists can thrive, where the public can experience art being made in real time and where Cairns continues to build its reputation as a vibrant cultural destination,” he said.
“We have exciting plans ahead and we’re only just getting started.”
