For the last few years, visitors to the Tropic Breeze Caravan Park have produced and presented a successful yearly fundraising musical.

This year, however, for something a little different, they decided to serve up a ‘My Kitchen Rules’ style cooking competition.

Organiser Barry Ion said “we just wanted to get everyone in the park involved and using the local facilities we discovered some great cooks and some amazing dishes”.

“Apart from the cooking, we had the judges making the important decisions, plus some musical entertainment throughout the afternoon,” he said.

“Amongst all of the fun and culinary delights, we were also able to raise some important funds for the neighbourhood centre, helping their emergency relief program, so everyone benefitted.”

The emergency relief program assists locally with a number of issues, including working proactively with OzHarvest and Second Bite to help with food shortages, helping people get to work or for medical appointments, emergency accommodation and rental subsidies, plus transportation, paying for medical treatment and more.

Centre coordinator Belinda Fischer took part as one of the judges.

“The winning dish, a double crunch hot honey salmon, was so amazing I asked for the recipe and so did half the caravan park. I recently cooked this for my family and it was a hit,” she said.

“We’d like to send out a massive round of applause to Geovanna D’Aloisio and Barry Ion, the amazing organisers, for putting on a My Kitchen Rules-style camp cooking fundraiser that was nothing short of spectacular.

“Thanks to their creativity, hard work, plus the sausage sizzle and raffles, they raised a fantastic $920 for the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre.”

The NicNak Shed, which like the neighbourhood centre, is part of the Port Douglas Community Service Network holds their annual fashion parade on Saturday August 30, at the Sea Temple Resort and Spa. This will be another fun fundraiser to assist in the operation of this local organisation.
