Port Douglas Community Service Network chief executive officer Emma Travers said the event provided “a unique opportunity for the diverse men of Douglas Shire and the women who support them to get together and celebrate the positive impact of men in our Shire”.

“The theme of ‘celebrating men and boys’ highlighted the need for positive role models for boys and young men,” she said.

“We are so grateful to Andrew Jamieson (Department of Sport) and (Deputy Mayor) Roy Zammataro for sharing their experiences and being so open about difficult times in their lives where they have had to seek support.”

The event was held at Club Mossman, organised by the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre, with its intention to highlight the importance of men’s health, wellbeing and positive role models in the community. Nearly 60 took part in lunch and barefoot bowls was held on Wednesday 19 November.

In Australia, International Men’s Day is regarded as a great opportunity to take part in a global conversation about manhood. It addresses masculinity and men’s issues by highlighting some of the social issues that men and boys face, thus making a difference in our communities. The day celebrates men and boys for their diversity, while having some fun in the process.

“It’s an event for everyone, men, women, families and community groups,” said Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre coordinator Belinda Fischer.

“The day featured bare foot bowls, guest speakers, entertainment and opportunities to connect with friends, family and local services,” she said.

Douglas Shire Council also supported the day through their microgrant program.
