Lions roar at Mareeba
THE Leichhardt Lions have kicked off their 2026–27 campaign in style, claiming a 3-1 away victory over the Mareeba Bulls in front of a large crowd on Saturday night.

Travelling to Mareeba is never an easy assignment, but the Lions showed composure and resilience to secure the three points in the opening round.
Despite challenging conditions and a lively home crowd celebrating the Bulls’ 80th year of football in Far North Queensland, Leichhardt were able to settle into the match and capitalise on their opportunities.
Lions captain Chris Sullivan said the result was a pleasing reward following a strong pre-season.
“We had a very good pre-season and remain undefeated so far,” Mr Sullivan said.
“Playing away to Mareeba was always going to be tricky and the conditions were not favourable to either team.”
The Lions faced an early setback when an own goal by Mr Sullivan handed Mareeba an advantage, but they responded well, regaining control of the match and going on to score three goals to seal the victory.
Mr Sullivan redeemed himself by scoring a brace while Declan McAlister scored the third.
“We bounced back from our own goal to score three,” Mr Sullivan said. He also highlighted the contribution of the squad’s depth: “We have a relatively young team, but our experience off the bench made the difference tonight.”
With the opening round win secured, the Lions have set a positive tone for the season ahead and will be looking to build on this momentum.
“It’s always good to get off to a winning start to the season,” Mr Sullivan said.
Leichhardt now turn their attention to this Sunday’s clash against Edge Hill Tigers, hoping to continue their unbeaten start.
Across the league, there were a few notable results: Edge Hill Tigers defeated Southside Comets 2–0, Stratford Dolphins drew 0–0 with Innisfail United, while the match between Redlynch Strikers and Marlin Coast Rangers was postponed.
The weekend’s fixtures have already begun to shape the early season ladder and the Lions will be eager to maintain their strong form when they meet the Tigers next week.
