Lily saved lives
A BRAVE little Yorkshire terrier, who saved her owner's life in a devastating fire in Cairns, has been honoured with a posthumous bravery award.

Lily, a medical assistance dog belonging to Cairns resident Kay Scarrabelotti, was recognised at a special ceremony at the Cairns Regional Council, attended by Mayor Amy Eden, State Member for Cairns Michael Healy and Federal Member for Leichhardt Matt Smith.
The Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation recognised Lily for her actions during a fire at a unit complex in Parramatta Park, when she alerted her owner to the danger.
Ms Scarrabelotti said her beloved companion's swift actions had saved several residents from the blaze in July 2025.
“And thank God for little Lily because she saved six lives that night,” she said.
It wasn't the first time Lily had come to her owner's aid.
Ms Scarrabelotti recalled being washed down a mountainside in the Daintree rainforest during Cyclone Jasper, with Lily climbing back up to raise the alarm.
The determined little dog barked persistently until Ms Scarrabelotti's son came to investigate, then followed her back to where his mother had fallen.
Sadly, Lily later succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire and died on 18 December 2025.
The ceremony was an emotional occasion for Ms Scarrabelotti, who had relied on Lily, her medical assistance dog and loyal companion, for 14 years. Desley Moule, who helped secure the posthumous award, said Lily's bravery warranted formal recognition.

Ms Moule has also been appointed as the organisation’s Far North Queensland representative.
Cairns Mayor Amy Eden praised Ms Moule’s persistence in organising the ceremony and bringing together representatives from all three levels of government.
“It’s not easy to get three members of different levels of government together,” Cr Eden said.
Federal Member for Leichhardt Matt Smith reflected on the special relationship between people and their dogs.
“You know, on your best day or your worst day, your dog is going to be there to love you and tell you it’s all going to be OK,” Mr Smith said.
State Member for Cairns Michael Healy echoed the sentiment. “It’s probably the only time in your life you’ll get unconditional love,” Mr Healy said.
For Ms Scarrabelotti, the framed certificate is a lasting tribute to a beloved companion whose loyalty and courage made an extraordinary difference.
She may have been small enough to fit in a handbag, but Lily’s courage was anything but pint-sized.
