THE free tenure of the colourful Julatten library has been renewed by the Mareeba Shire Council.

The new user-agreement ensures the library can continue its shared-use facility at Geraghty Park until terminated by either party.

The Julatten Edna Head Library underwent a mural makeover this year when local artist Lavinia Letheby added artwork to the existing creations, which featured birds of the area, including the buff-breasted paradise kingfisher and the double-eyed fig parrot.

The library was founded in 1952 by Bill and Edna Head and is on land near the Julatten School.

In 2006 the library collection was moved to the Geraghty Park building and was renamed Julatten Edna Head Library in honour of the founder at its official opening.

The library is a community, self-managed enterprise that relies on members and council support for its continued service.
