Hub supports many who care a lot
SINCE opening in July 2025, the Cairns Carer Hub has welcomed over 400 unpaid carers.

As it approaches its first anniversary, the team is aiming to reach more locals who may be quietly struggling while caring for a loved one.
An initiative by national not-for-profit Wellways Carer Gateway, the hub was co-designed with local carers to create a dedicated space for support, connection and relaxation alongside partners like Arafmi Queensland, Dementia Australia and Kookaburra Kids.
Cairns Hub navigator Donna Raymond said the space had grown into “an ecosystem of connection and support”.
“My intention is to create a welcoming, safe and inclusive space where people who support others can share their story and find support,” she said.
“Just because you make things look easy doesn’t mean it isn’t hard. I want people to know there is a place that understands their journey.”
Cairns local Jaclyn Brown found the hub while searching for support during burnout in October of last year. “Over the last 18 years I’ve cared for family members and I have three children, all neurodivergent and with other health conditions,” she said.
“I was very much needing support.”
After hesitating to visit, Ms Brown says taking that first step has had an “immense impact”.
“When I walked in, I felt an instant sense of relief,” she said.
“I have found the hub to be a most welcoming, judgement-free space for me to catch my breath, practice self-care and catch up with life admin. The staff are amazing.
“It is refreshing being able to connect with other carers. I find everyone in this space just gets it and I can continue to learn how to best support the people I care for.”
The hub offers peer support, counselling, vocational coaching and connections to local services in a relaxed and inclusive environment.
The Cairns Carer Hub is located at 141-143 Abbott St and is open Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm. To find out more about Carer Gateway and the carer hubs, visit www.bit.ly/3NsoS5m or call 1800 422 737.
