That is the belief of the staff and volunteers at the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre.

“We know Christmas can be a stressful time and these hampers offer a little extra help and cheer when it’s needed most,” said community development worker Tracy Gibson.

Their hampers are made possible thanks to the generosity of local businesses, plus the wider community. Together, they donate toys, non-perishable food items and even the baskets that the hampers are packed in.

“Their support truly brings this initiative to life,” Ms Gibson said.

The neighbourhood centre, run by the Port Douglas Community Service Network, most commonly supports local singles and couples with their Christmas hampers, although they say that families are also encouraged to apply.

Their key aim is to ensure anyone experiencing hardship during the festive season feels supported.

Each year, two of the centre’s dedicated staff coordinate the collection and packing of the hampers. They’re joined by a group of volunteers who generously donate their time to wrap gifts and decorate the baskets, adding an extra touch of Christmas spirit.

To apply for a Christmas hamper, people need to visit the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre at 6/10 Mowbray Street and fill out a form in order to be placed on the ‘hamper list’. Office opening hours are 9am to 4pm.
