The club finished an impressive second place overall out of five clubs, just falling short to Cairns SLS club.

The event of two days on Four Mile Beach involved more than 200 competitors making the road trip to represent their local nippers club. Ellis Beach, Etty Bay and Mission Beach rounded out the five competing clubs.

Results were Cairns first, Port Douglas second, Ellis Beach third, Etty Bay fourth and Mission Beach fifth.

Port Douglas had competitors as young as six-years-old and some close to 70.

The Port Douglas competitors showed out bringing home an abundance of silverware.

The final report saw Douglas athletes winning a total of 52 gold, 36 silver and 15 bronze medals, on top of team events bringing home more awards.

Individual awards of the day saw Brian Markham win age champion for 70–79 years men, John Goodman won 60–69 men, Grant Knight won 50–59 men, Irene Knight took home the 40–49 women’s, Marine Theiller won the 30–39 women’s, while young prodigy Elise Wright took home the under-12s and Jett Harty won the under-10s.

The success didn’t just finish on this weekend as a number of Douglas juniors were selected to represent North Queensland at the state championships on the Sunshine Coast next year.

Alvie Langley, Lani Kelliher, Ruby Harty, Elise Wright, Emma Brard and Marlee Onekawa were all part of the juniors picked to represent Port Douglas.

Overall, the club and competition officials counted the event as a huge success.
