The projects – a $210,000 raised crossing on Snapper Island Drive at Wonga Beach and a new $250,000 footpath at Ulysses Avenue at Craiglie – have been submitted for full funding under a state government program.

“We know how important safe walking routes are to our community,” Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said.

“These upgrades will make a real difference and respond to what locals have been asking for.”

Another $580,000 footpath project in Port Douglas (Endeavour Street) will be considered for future funding. That involves 580m of a new footpath to complete a missing link.

A report said council had identified critical gaps in the local footpath network, particularly along school routes, which have raised significant community concern regarding child safety.

“Missing links have been identified in the local footpath network, particularly along school routes. These gaps in infrastructure frequently generate public complaints, with a strong focus on concerns about child safety,” the report said.
