For some season ends, while for others it’s just starting
IT’S been a huge week in and around Cairns in the sporting world, as some codes are wrapping up their seasons, while others are just getting underway.

Basketball
It’s been a big month around Cairns Basketball, with this last week being no different.
On top of all the grand finals there were 15 athletes invited to Townsville to compete in the state performance program (SPP) where they look to be selected into the north Queensland side.
The Cairns U14s rep sides have also hit their final preparations as they make the road trip down to Townsville to compete in round one of the North Queensland Junior Basketball Championships (NQJBC) as their rep season officially gets underway.
Soccer
Unfortunately, due to the weather, the Far Northern premier league (soccer) has had all its round one matches postponed.
While an interrupted season start, clubs aren’t disappointed as they now get another week of preparation.
Defending premier Douglas Dragons’ veteran Ben Syrett said “we’ve been given another week of preparations so no complaints on our end.”
AFL
The AFL Cairns preseason matches have also seen another delay with all scheduled matches also being cancelled.
With only two weeks to go, all clubs now look to their round one matchups which are very quickly approaching.
Cricket
The Cricket Far North season has officially wrapped up for season 2025/26, with the division 1 and division 3 grand finals being played.
Barron River dominated in the division 1 men’s game, winning by six
wickets. Barron put up an impressive run total of 4/249, then bowling Mulgrave out for 151.
In the 3rd grade grand final, the Bhutanese Rovers defeated Mareeba by seven wickets with an over to spare.
Unfortunately, due to weather concerns the division 2 and 4 games were washed out.
