Eyesore bins being removed

RUSTY cane bins, along the Captain Cook Highway between Port Douglas and Mossman, have been a daily sight for both locals and visitors over many months.

As of January 5, the removal has now started with the bins being individually broken down.

Last November the Douglas Gazette reported on how locals were unhappy about the eyesores having a negative effect, particularly on the visitor experience of tourists.

“The main road towards Mossman is used every day by many locals and tourists and the sight of these rusty bins is not a good look,” said local Graeme Pimlott.

John Goggin of mill liquidators Worrells Cairns office is responsible for the cane bins.

At the time, he said: “I confirm the bins are in the process of being sold and will be removed in the near future.”

“Cane bins are a part of our region’s history but leaving them along the highway doesn’t reflect the pride we had in our sugar industry. Council has been advocating for their removal for some time and we welcome the action now being taken,” Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said.

Worrells were contacted about the cane bin removal and the timescale for the job.
