In the early hours of Tuesday morning (4 November), the final truckload of sugar cane completed its journey to Gordonvale, marking the end of an era for the Mossman sugar industry.

Douglas Shire Council has paid tribute to generations of cane farmers who have shaped the region’s identity and economy for more than 130 years.

Mayor Lisa Scomazzon expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the community.

“Sugar cane has been a cornerstone of our local economy and a defining feature of our landscape,” she said.

“We thank the generations of farmers who have worked tirelessly to support their families, our community and the region’s prosperity. We wish them well as they explore new ventures and opportunities for the future.”

The Mossman Advisory Committee, which meets today, will continue to explore pathways for agricultural innovation and diversification in the Douglas Shire.

Cr Scomazzon said council remained committed to supporting local farmers and will continue to advocate for their interests at both state and federal levels.

“Council will continue to play an active role in the transition process. We’re focused on ensuring agriculture remains a meaningful part of our region’s future,” she said.

Canegrowers Mossman chairman Matt Watson thanked Cr Scomazzon, councillors and staff, the chamber of commerce and the whole community for their backing and support over the last few years.

“The cane farmers and industry benefited from the efforts of all who showed and called for support from the state government,” he said.

“While the effort to establish an alternative agricultural industry isn’t over and may take a while, farmers and farming businesses will continue to pursue transitioning to alternative crops and produce.

“Grower representatives are part of the Mossman Advisory Committee and will continue their efforts to ensure farmers have a way forward and agriculture a place within the shire.”
