The drivers of the year 2025 Russell Lacey and Melvonia Ord provide transport for older people, people with disability and community members who would otherwise struggle to get to medical appointments, social activities and important cultural events.

For Mr Lacey, who has been with the NDIS provider service for three and a half years, the best part of the work is building relationships with clients.

“Driving some of these clients – you really get to know them and their challenges,” he said.

“Without TransitCare, many people would rely on unreliable or expensive options or miss appointments altogether. Getting people out and about makes a real difference to their independence and mental health.”

Trust was another important part of the service, said Ms Ord, who has been with TransitCare for two years.

“Our clients feel safe and respected and that’s why they trust us” she said.

“For our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, we’re not just transport – we help them get to sorry business, ceremonies and community gatherings. That cultural connection really matters here in the Cairns community.”

TransitCare CEO Amanda Mather said the drivers of the year awards recognised frontline staff who consistently deliver safe, person-focused care.

“Russell and Melvonia represent what TransitCare stands for – reliability, respect and trust,” she said.

“Our drivers play a vital role in improving health and wellbeing outcomes by supporting independence, reducing social isolation and ensuring people can access healthcare when they need it. Their work delivers benefits not only for individual clients, but for the whole community.”
