This year, the appeal will once again deliver Christmas hampers filled with essential items to those doing it tough, ensuring everyone has the chance to enjoy the holiday spirit.

Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said the initiative was about supporting residents who might be struggling to make ends meet.

“With the cost of living continuing to rise, many families are feeling the pressure,” she said.

“Christmas should be a time of joy, connection and celebration – not stress and uncertainty.

“These hampers are a simple but powerful way to show people they’re not alone and that their community cares.”

The appeal is made possible through the support of Mossman Support Services, Mossman Elders Justice Group, Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre, Bamanga Bubu Ngadimunku Aboriginal Corporation and Warringu Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Service.

“If your family is experiencing financial hardship and would appreciate a hamper this festive season, please reach out to one of these organisations to register your interest. Eligibility criteria do apply, so be sure to check with them directly,” Cr Scomazzon said.

Donations to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal are welcome year-round and can be made at the Douglas Shire Council customer service counter.
