Danielle’s career change

MOSSMAN-born social worker Danielle Ejneberg was inspired to have a big career change after a friendship with a neighbour motivated her to help her community and challenge systemic health issues.

She chose to do a four-year Bachelor of Social Work degree at JCU Cairns and now works for Cairns Hospital in two different social work roles.

Half the week she provides coordinated support to Cairns Hospital patients experiencing domestic and family violence – working closely with other support agencies in Cairns.

“Domestic violence can affect families, children and the wider community. It can affect anyone,” Ms Ejneberg said.

The rest of the time she works with medical patients who have complex needs and may require services and support after hospital.

“I support and advocate for sub-acute medical patients to make their own informed decisions about discharging home, aged care services, coping with change of health and function and liaising with their families for supportive discharges.”

“It’s very special to work with our older patients. I hear about their whole life journey and it’s very humbling.”

A Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service spokesman said Ms Ejneberg and the social work team were much appreciated for promoting wellbeing through counselling, advocacy and connecting people with community services.
