The skipper of a prawn boat detained the would-be thief (right), who allegedly tried to steal the vessel from a public jetty.

Police were called to the jetty near Market Park on Sunday by the owner of the FV Diamond Lil.

It is believed the Santiego Seafoods business owner was at the wharf to sell wild prawns to the public when a man boarded the trawler without permission.

The skipper caught the man and restrained him with rachet straps until police arrived.

Afterwards Santiego Seafoods posted a notice on local social media pages.

“Due to a scumbag trying to drive/steal our boat (allegedly) we won’t be having a sell,” it said.

It is understood a 25-year-old man has been charged with one count of unlawful use of a vessel and is due to be appear in court later this month.

Police were called to the jetty about 7am.
