Athletes do Shire proud at Queensland titles

THE Douglas Shire has had an abundance of young athletes recently compete in Townsville at state championships in hope of finding their way to national titles.

The Shire had eight athletes competing in a variety of events over the last fortnight.

Over the middle weekend of the school holidays, they competed at the North Queensland Athletics Championships in Townsville. They were Caitlyn Butland, Sophie Hamilton, Ailbe Hamilton, Dallas Shepherdson, Zamirah Wild, Parker Lee, Hudson Lee and Estella Spence.

The athletes showed out in a huge way according to the following results:

  • Caitlyn Butland (under-18 women), pole vault second, 400m second, 100m hurdles fourth, triple jump first, 200m eighth

  • Sophie Hamilton, (15-years women), 100m seventh, 90m hurdles third, long jump seventh

  • Ailbe Hamilton (13 years boys), 100m sixth, 400m sixth, 800m seventh, discus sixth

  • Dallas Shepherdson (14 years men), discus second, javelin first, shot put second

  • Zamirah Wild (14 years women), 100m third, 200m third, long jump fifth place, triple Jump sixth.

Last weekend, Ezi Masi-Lansana travelled to Brisbane and competed in the Queensland All-Schools Championships in the under-18 men with a second in the 100m and third in the 200m. Caitlyn Butland, Dallas Shepherdson and Ezi Masi-Lansana have qualified for the National All Schools Athletics championships in Melbourne later this year, while twins Parker and Hudson Lee were also able to book their tickets to national championships in 2026.
