The long overdue facility, first announced in 2017, would strengthen emergency response capability across the Far North and support emergency call takers and emergency medical dispatchers (EMDs) who answer the community’s most urgent calls for help.

The facility will feature 12 purpose-built workstations for operations centre staff, with capacity for future expansion as demand for emergency services continues to grow.

Once the new centre and regional office is complete, stage two of the project will redevelop the Cairns Ambulance Station.

Health and Ambulance Services Minister Tim Nicholls said the new purpose-built centre would ensure call takers and EMDs had the modern facilities they needed to “continue to deliver lifesaving care for Far North Queenslanders”.

QAS Far Northern assistant commissioner Brina Keating said the new centre would support the important work by the emergency call takers and medical dispatchers.

“(They) are the unseen frontline of pre-hospital emergency care,” she said.
