THE $50 million rebuild of Mossman’s electricity network is almost complete.

The Mossman Substation, which supplies electricity to the town and surrounding areas, has been undergoing a significant rebuild and upgrade.

Originally a 66/22kV substation, Ergon Energy has been transforming the site into a 132/22kV facility to firm up power supply reliability across the region.

Ergon’s Far North area manager Charlie Casa said the bulk of the Douglas Shire network upgrade was finished, with final works scheduled for completion by the end of the year, weather permitting.

“It’s been a massive undertaking that will improve the reliability of the electricity supply to thousands of customers, including at Mossman, Craiglie, Mount Molloy/Yalkula and surrounding areas,” he said.

“The new Mossman substation (above) is humming along and the only thing left to do at this site is the removal of decommissioned equipment.

“In terms of the ‘poles and wires’ upgrade, our crews need to complete some work on the high-voltage network that supplies Mount Molloy and some feeder lines over the Rex Range.

“We will keep the community updated on the final stages of construction and would like to thank everyone for their support during the project, which has seen crews working at sites across the Shire.”

The substation, currently supplied via 66kV feeder lines from a substation near Mareeba, will be connected to new 132kV powerlines.

The upgrade includes additional works at a substation near Mount Molloy and Craiglie to provide backup supply options.

Sections of the old 66kV lines crossing the Rex Range and Wet Tropics area will be removed, reducing environmental impact.

Ergon also plans a new works depot in Mossman.

The current depot, which covers from Upper Daintree to Wangetti and Julatten, is exposed to flooding, limited land size and traffic management issues.

The new depot will occupy almost 2ha for pole storage and other operational needs.
